Valentine’s Day is around the corner, but if you haven’t made plans yet don’t fret, there’s still time to book a table at one of Canada’s most romantic restaurants.

According to a new study by OpenTable, 14 of Canada’s 100 most romantic restaurants are right here in Toronto.

Open Table says in 2023, 51 per cent of Valentine’s Day reservations were made at least five days out, so diners who book before Friday still have a good chance of securing their spot.

The list was compiled by analyzing more than 1.1 million diner reviews and metrics including ratings and the percentage of restaurant reviews diners tagged as “romantic,” according to OpenTable.

The most romantic Toronto restaurants are:

The most romantic restaurant in all of Canada was Alvin’s Jazz Club in Calgary, AB, followed by Ancaster Mill in Hamilton, ON and Arôme – Casino du Lac Leamy in Gatineau, QC.

The data suggests that diners love to splurge on Valentine’s Day.

“In 2023, the average spend per meal for Valentine’s Day was up 48 per cent year-over-year vs. non-holiday days,” according to OpenTable.

Further consumer research suggests the trend will continue in 2024, with 73 per cent of Canadians planning to spend the same or more for Valentine’s Day than they did last year, the data found.

There’s also been an uptick in solo dining trends with more individuals than ever choosing to dine out alone on Valentine’s Day.

OpenTable’s consumer research indicates that if spending Valentine’s Day alone, 15 per cent of participants said they would be visiting a quaint cafe for coffee and light bites, 12 per cent said they would head to a buffet or bottomless dinner, 11 per cent wanted to try out a dining experience like a wine and food pairing or tasting menu and 10 per cent planned on treating themselves at an award-winning restaurant.

“New consumer research shows that nearly a quarter of Canadians would solo dine on Valentine’s Day, making it an opportunity to date yourself and practice self-love,” OpenTable Canada country director Matt Davis said in a statement.

The online survey was conducted by PureSpectrum among 1501 general Canadian consumers on the topic of Valentine’s Day attitudes and behaviours. The research fieldwork took place between January 19 – 24, 2024. Within this sample, quotas were applied to major cities for direct comparison.
